Safe Skincare During Pregnancy

When you are putting a lot of energy into growing a new human, following all the rules that come with pregnancy can seem overwhelming. However, with these simple guidelines, you can take care of your skin and your baby while feeling relieved that everything you are doing is safe and healthy.

Pregnancy Safe Skincare Products

Look for:

When it comes to pregnancy, do natural, do gentle and do simple. Stick to your regular skincare routine as best as you can, and maybe add the following if you are unsure of where to begin:

  • For sun protection and moisturising: Not all sunscreens are pregnancy safe. Some can have harmful chemicals. However, we would recommend mineral-based sunscreens—for example, the MD Restoring Daily Defence Moisturizer SPF 50.
  • For cleansing and anti-ageing: You don’t need to sacrifice your skincare for your pregnancy. You can still combat skin problems as you always have, including keeping your skin really clean and continuing your anti-ageing treatments to keep it looking fresh, bright and bouncy. We recommend something with a glycolic acid-base, as this is a friendly chemical to your skin and your baby—for example, Image Ageless Total Facial Cleanser.
  • Safe brightening: some products for brightening can be harmful to pregnant people. However, you don’t have to sacrifice that radiant shine while pregnant, as long as you find brightening hydroquinone-free products—for example, MD Restoring Brightening Crème with ADT Technology.

Avoid:

Ultimately, it is best to avoid anything with harsh chemicals during your pregnancy, full stop. However, there are a few ingredients in particular that you should aim to avoid.

Before purchasing any skincare products, check their labels for any of the following ingredients:

  • Retin-A, Retinol, and Retinyl Palmitate – Too much vitamin A can be unhealthy for your growing baby, and these ingredients may cause this.
  • Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid – this can be found in many acne creams.
  • Hydroquinone – this is a chemical that is often used in skin lighteners or for the reduct of pigment. It is best to avoid these practices during pregnancy.
  • Not all essential oils are approved by the Australian government. Be sure to read the labels to make sure that is have been accessed as safe. If it doesn’t say anything, it probably hasn’t been approved.

Ultimately, the authorities at the Australian government have done loads of research to make sure everything on our shelves is safe. As long as you are sure to check the labels of products and keep your eye out for “not safe for pregnant women” advice within these labels, there is no need to stress.

Pregnancy Safe Skincare Treatments

The London Signature Facial – the beauty of the London signature is that it is tailored to your specific needs. Therefore, we can customise the facial to not only address your areas of concern for your skin but also ensure that all products we use during the treatment are entirely pregnancy safe. In the London Signature, you will have a 30-minute consultation with Dr Amy Thompson Bailey, so there is plenty of time to discuss your skincare needs throughout your pregnancy.

Spa Treatments – Our skin changes a lot throughout pregnancy, with many different hormones swirling around. Therefore, facials help regulate the effects of pregnancy on your skin and correct areas of concern such as dryness, oiliness or acne. All our spa treatments and facials are safe for pregnant women and are an excellent way to relax.

Although there is incredibly low risk, we generally suggest pregnant people refrain from getting dermal fillers, wrinkle relaxers and beauty boosters.
